He wrote in his memories “The wild coast of Isla Negra, with the tumultuous oceanic movement allowed me to surrender with passion to the venture of my new song”. The site was originally called “Las Gaviotas”. The poet renamed it Isla Negra for the color of the rocks and perhaps because over there he could isolate himself to write. Later the sea was converted in one of the mythical sceneries of his poetry. The most important complete collections are still in this house and are linked to the sea: figure heads, retort of sails, ships inside bottles, seashells, among others. The poet always celebrated the national holidays, though the situation the country was living, then, the military coup, on September 18, 1973, some Friends came to Isla Negra. However, they only brought alarming news. The next day, Neruda, seriously ill, was taken in ambulance to the capital, from where he only would return to Isla Negra in December 1992, when his remains were transferred there, next to his wife Matilde Urrutia. His funeral was realized with all the honors that the poet deserved, and with the assistance of the highest authorities of the nation.
