Mendoza is located in the center-west of Argentina, in the foothill of the Andes Mountain Range, border with Chile. This province, founded by Spanish Pedro del Castillo in 1561, is known for its mountain, trees, canals and ditches, and of course for its wines.
A ride through Mendoza: Leaving the hotel to explore the city and to discover its past, we will pass by the 5 main squares. At first we will pass by ESPAÑA square, with its original Spanish majolicas. Then we’ll stop by ITALIA square, where every February the “Fiesta in Piazza” takes place. This festivity is known for the typical foods and dances from Italy.
Immediately afterwards, we pass by Chile square and San Martin square. This one has a monument of our national hero General San Martin. And finally Independencia square: the main central square where the most important activities take place.
Then the Sarmiento Walkway: a pedestrian boulevard of three blocks, where there are cafes with tables in the open air, newsstands. Next to the pedestrian, San Martin Avenue is the traffic and commerce backbone of the city center.
After this stop, we go back in time to our foundation, since we are going to the foundational area of Mendoza, area that was devastated by a major earthquake in 1861, being afterwards rebuilt and moved to the west, where the new Mendoza is nowadays.
Then we arrive to the huge forged iron gates –imported from Scotland for the Centenary- located in the access to the vast and beautiful General San Martin Park. This 500-hectares park deserves to be visited either by car, by bicycle or on foot, if you have enough time. This park was designed by French landscape architect Charles Thays, inaugurated in 1909 and enlarged with a Zoo in 1940.
Since then, it has been the most important oasis and lung for the city of Mendoza. Going up by a lovely road next to the Zoo access, the most interesting place is the Gloria Hill, crowned by the Andes Army Monument (1914), one of the most complex and powerful bronze sculpture ever made.
From the Gloria Hill, we can see the Frank Romero Day Amphitheatre, where the final show of the Harvest Festival takes place.
For dinner we will visit El Enemigo Winery, which belongs to Alejandro Vigil, famous winemaker, where you enjoy an exquisite dish accompanied with excellent wines. Return to hotel.
