DAY 2: PUERTO MADRYN

Breakfast at hotel.

Full day visit to Península Valdés, wildlife reserve.

The interpretive center – Ameghino Isthmus, located to the entrance of the reserve. From there we will have the opportunity to see both gulfs at the same time, from its vantage point we will have a first idea of the geography of the peninsula, coastal features, Bird Island, part of the gravel paths and their derivations. We will contemplate the desert and part of the native fauna (guanacos, rheas, maras, and sheep.) that make up this rugged landscape of our southern Patagonia. Big ranchs, morning dew, gusty winds and salty air complete the scene. 100 km distant. from Puerto Madryn, we can found the Tourist town of Puerto Piramide. Covered by the morning breezes from the coast, the villa is characterized by being “protected” and surrounded by a landscape of unique characteristics. Creating a natural harbor (location from which to make the board whale watching), it is the space chosen for those wishing to relax, enjoy typical dishes (fish, shellfish and Patagonian lamb) participate in underwater baptisms, hiking and water sports in general. During the summer months attended by those seeking tranquility, excellent beaches, clear water, fun, nature and wildlife can be found. As Puerto Piramide is a protected area (and only permanent settlement of people stable), the idea is to impart through it an “ecological conscience”. Moving on, we will visit Caleta Valdes (colony of elephant seals and sea lions located at the eastern end of the peninsula. There is a hostel, a health center, and trails to the coast. Located at this point, facing the sea, we will experience feelings of grandeur and beauty that represent the open ocean and its environment. With salt air breezes on our faces, we will be able to distinguish all types of marine fauna and landforms shaped by the forces of nature over time. This unique landscape and the stunning surroundings will be hard to forget.

We continue then to Punta Norte, another colony of marine fauna located on the northeast corner. With a small interpretive center, it is particularly known for its rugged coastline, the contrasts between the high and low tides and of course the presence and attacks by the orcas, which usually “visit” the area in search of new preys. Depending on the season, the distribution of the coastal wildlife and the conditions of the weather, we either visit Punta Norte or Punta Delgada.

The “sightings on board” depart only from the tourist town of Puerto Piramide. As it is the only port from which these ships set sail, basic advice will be provided to enlist all visitors for a one of a kind experience. Once fitted jackets are on, our passengers will be transported directly to the vessels (previously agreed outputs). The experience lasts approx. ½ hours according to weather conditions. Without having to navigate much, we can spot them a few meters from the coast. With qualified and fully equipped boats, it will be possible to fully enjoy the excursion with sightings “guaranteed”. Both adults and children will be able to do the trip without difficulty.

DAY 3: PUERTO MADRYN

Breakfast at hotel.

Full day excursion to Punta Tombo.

In 1979, the province of Chubut created the fauna reserve of Punta Tombo to protect Magellanic penguins and also the many species that live with them. Punta Tombo is an ancient beach, a result of the changes in the sea level, the rounded and polished stones are a proof of this. It was also an Indian cemetery. Several graves were on the hill and it is assumed that Tehuelches lived and hunted there.

The base of the tip is characterized by very wide beaches and gentle slopes, a feature that leverage

the penguins to build their nests. Leaving Puerto Madryn, south along National Route N º 3, after traveling about 80 km on pavement and passing the city of Trelew, we should take Provincial Route No. 1 and on this gravel road, after 107 miles we finally arrive to Punta Tombo, the largest continental reserve of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus).

There is an entrance fee like in the rest of the provincial reserves, it has toilet facilities and bar. To observe the wildlife it is important to respect the trails perfectly set for travel.

Upon returning there are as well some interesting options to visit, at the conclusion of the gravel you may take National Route No. 25, either to go to the coast, visiting Rawson (capital of the province) and Union Beach, where you can glimpse from the spa’s beautiful Commerson’s dolphins or to visit the port. If instead of the coast you go towards the valley, you can visit Trelew, the industrial and commercial area, and continuing along Route 25 you will find Gaiman, a Welsh colony that retains its traditions. There you can find historical buildings and enjoy a typical Welsh tea in one of its famous tea houses. It’s very interesting to take the path of the farms and see the Welsh Chapels and different agro-tourism ventures that are along this route. Despite it is informed throughout the tour, it is worth remembering: on gravel roads is not advisable to exceed 60 km / h
